CITY WALKSHOP
WHAT A MESS ARCHIVES: THE INFORMAL CITY

DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES POSTPONED UNTIL AFTER SUMMER!

Sunday June 23th 2024, 13:30-15:30 hrs

Reclaim your city is an international movement that uses art and activism to challenge gentrification and over-designed urbanism. Which examples of informal design and Do-it-Yourself (DIY) can you still find in public spaces?

Join us for a walkshop in which we’ll introduce 3D scanning as a novel approach to urban exploration and use it to capture how ‘The Informal City’ is reflected in Rotterdam. These captures will then be combined into a digital sculpture and collected in a web archive to tell the stories about what is going on on the streets in Rotterdam, independent of government services and urban design agencies. Walk along and look for striking examples of informality during this exploration of the city.

This walkshop is part of What a Mess, a collaborative project developed by Pedro Gil Farias and Hugo Pilate, exploring the untapped narrative potential of the urban fabric through 3D scanning walkshops and interactive exhibitions. For more info: www.whatamess.city

Design platform Rotterdam offers this program to encourage designers and other interested parties to change their view of the city.

Trained at TU Delft, Pedro is an interdisciplinary researcher, artist and designer, repurposing physical and digital media to critically reflect on cities and urban spaces. By taking a DIY and amateurish approach to his work, he’s able to experiment with different mediums such as 3D scanning, participatory workshops, videogames and screen-printing.
